Abstract

Eyelid tumors are a group of lesions originating from various structures that make up the eyelid, including the epidermis, dermis, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, connective tissue, and melanocytic tissue. These lesions can be benign or malignant, with highly variable clinical manifestations. The diagnostic approach to eyelid tumors requires a thorough medical history, a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination, and a detailed morphological evaluation of the lesion. Certain clinical signs—such as loss of eyelashes (madarosis), ulceration, irregular lesion margins, infiltration of surrounding tissues, and progressive growth—may raise suspicion of malignancy. Accurate diagnosis is crucial because each tumor type has distinct biological characteristics, treatment options, and prognosis. Management of eyelid tumors aims to completely eradicate the lesion while preserving the protective function of the eyeball, the aesthetics of the eyelid, and the patient’s quality of life. Surgical excision with tumor-free margins remains the primary treatment for most malignant eyelid tumors and is often followed by eyelid reconstruction based on the extent of the resulting defect. Adjuvant therapies such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy may be considered in certain cases based on histopathological type, disease stage, and the patient’s condition. The prognosis is strongly influenced by the histopathological type, tumor size, involvement of surrounding tissues, the presence of metastases, as well as the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment.
